Simon Raymonde about Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie for their song
Simon: From the second Robin and I wrote this tune, we knew it was one of our best. But one of the special things about Elizabeth Fraser was her ability to take a lovely piece of music & make it heartbreaking. i say we were lucky that she was finding herself and digging deep inside her heart during this song.
"I had to fantasise, i was a princess mum and dad were queen and king"
There is a gorgeous key change at 3.42, and Elizabeth’s singing still makes me cry.
"i had to fantasise, just to survive, i was a famous artist everybody took me seriously. even those who did not invest in me, i had to fantasise just to survive"
Also contains the lyric “(you find) you know who you are at every age”, the title of the opening track on the l.p.
